A Q&A WITH ALEX SCOTT

Get to know Reiss’ latest brand ambassador Alex Scott MBE, through an exclusive interview providing a personal insight into how fashion makes her feel and gives her confidence during her current busy schedule.

The former England and Arsenal player is recognisable as an unapologetically strong female with a notable public profile that began with her successful football career. She has since thrived as a broadcaster, charity advocate and most recently, a best-selling author – all whilst still leading the way for Women’s football.

You’ve had to work incredibly hard in your career and personal life, to get to where you are today. Do you also work hard with your wardrobe; would you say your style comes naturally to you, or is it a challenge to choose what you wear?

I would say that my style is constantly evolving as I like to experiment. Sometimes it is a challenge as I’m across a lot of different shows that have very different feelings. Some are more glam, some are more laid back, some I want to add my own style to the show, even though it might have had a certain feel for years and years - I want to bring my own personality. So, I will say it’s a challenge. My style is a challenge in my working life sometimes, but a challenge that I choose to accept and enjoy.

What inspires your outfit choices?

To be brutally honest, sometimes it’s my mood. Sometimes I just want an easier option. Sometimes I’m feeling happy and confident in myself, so I would choose more colours. So yeah, it all depends.

A thread that runs through our current campaign – Every Moment Is an Occasion – is that style choices should give the wearer complete confidence to be entirely themselves. Do you choose outfits with the intention of channelling the most authentic version of you, and if so, in what ways does that manifest?

I would say I’ve got to a stage where yes, even though I experiment a lot, and try and push myself, I always need to feel like me and people see that in me. I think when you are channelling your true authentic self you give off a confidence, you radiate stuff about you to people and people can feel you’re comfortable in your skin, in your clothes and everything. It’s all connected.

You wear a range of vibrant colours offset with more classic, understated tones. What influences the colours you choose?

I love wearing colour. I went through a stage where I wore a lot of black, I love black too. It’s very smart and very elegant. But I think my personality suits a lot of colour. So I like to show and express that. It’s not one particular colour, I think it goes back to the mood thing. So yeah, I just love colour because I think it reflects my personality.

At what point in your life did style become important to you, and what do you think influenced that?

I would say after the progression from football to TV. It was very easy for me to just throw on tracksuits every day and go to the training ground. When I was home, even though I would get dressed up on occasions, being in a role in the media meant that my uniform, my attire, changed. I think I was maturing as a person also and evolving. So I think that’s when style really became important to me and I was also learning.

What is your “go-to” item or items that you can’t live without?

I would say a dress - I like my knitwear dresses. Tight fitted, long, and just really comfortable. For me they’re easy if I’m travelling away a lot for studio work on TV. I know I can just throw it on and it looks put together and smart.

Our campaign, Every Moment Is an Occasion, seeks to highlight the joy in celebrating each moment, big or small. How do you like to celebrate your achievements and the special moments in your life?

I just like to either go out for dinner and have some wine with close friends or celebrate it with friends and family. It doesn’t have to be big all the time.

You participated in the 2012 London Olympics. London is a cornerstone of Reiss heritage, as it is for yourself. How did it feel to not only represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games, but to do so in your hometown, a place that holds so much history for you?

To be a part of the Olympics was very special. I think growing up I never had the Olympics on my radar because, as a young boy or girl in football, you dream of playing in a World Cup and in the Euros because playing football in the Olympics was never really a thing. It didn't feel attainable even though I loved the Olympics and would watch all the time. So when it came about to be in London, 2012 it was a huge moment, especially being in the East End of London seeing it all created. It was a proud, very special moment.

What is it about the city of London that you love, and find inspiring?

I love London so much. I just love that you can walk down a street you have walked down your whole life, and find something new that you've never seen. I love that it's so multicultural, that you can have different conversations with so many different people, the history that you are constantly learning about, and the historic buildings. There is just so much going on.

What do you feel is important about this partnership, and what do you hope to gain from it?

I think it's important that you have young girls that can love sport, love fashion and style, and take inspiration from the partnership - ‘look at me - I've had a glow up from Reiss’. I love that it’s affordable, it's attainable for them. It's a UK brand and I’m always talking about where I am from and how proud I am. So this partnership goes hand in hand and I think everyone can see that it's so authentic. It's not like a partnership where you're like why is that happening? It just fits together nicely and I'm proud to be the first ever Reiss Ambassador.
